Cathedral Park

$8.00

Cathedral Park is a city park of about 22 acres in North Portland's St. Johns neighborhood, on the east bank of the Willamette River directly beneath the St. Johns Bridge. It is named for the bridge's pointed Gothic arches, which rise over the lawn like the vaults of a cathedral. The bridge opened in 1931, but the land under it became a dumping ground after the city acquired it in 1968, until residents raised $7.5 million in the 1970s to build the park, which opened on May 3, 1980. It has paved paths, picnic tables, a boat ramp, a river beach and a small outdoor stage that hosts the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, held every summer since 1980 and the oldest free jazz festival west of the Mississippi. A new swimming and fishing dock opened in 2024 after volunteers cleared tons of concrete rubble from the shoreline.
