Cathedral Gorge State Park, near Panaca in eastern Nevada, is carved into soft bentonite clay and silt deposited by an ancient Pliocene-era lake that once filled the Meadow Valley Wash. Erosion has cut the sediment into narrow slot canyons, fluted walls, and spire-like formations resembling cathedral architecture, which continue to change shape with each rainstorm. Short trails let visitors walk directly into several of the narrow canyons. The park's soft, easily eroded rock makes its landscape one of the more dramatic and fast-changing in the Nevada state park system.
