Cape Henry Memorial marks the place where English colonists bound for Jamestown first came ashore in Virginia on April 26, 1607; they explored the area, named the cape and set up a cross before sailing on up the James River. A stone cross placed by the Daughters of the American Colonists in 1935 stands on the quarter-acre site, which is an isolated unit of Colonial National Historical Park. The same dunes overlook the scene of the 1781 Battle of the Virginia Capes, when the French navy kept the British fleet from reinforcing Cornwallis and set up the victory at Yorktown, and a statue of Admiral de Grasse and a granite memorial honor that battle. The memorial is inside Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story next to the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse, so civilians without base access go in the way lighthouse visitors do: a timed ticket, a SECNAV 5512 base security form for adults, a REAL ID for anyone over 16, and a shuttle from the base gate.
