Iron-on patch

Cape Henry Lighthouse

$8.00

The Old Cape Henry Lighthouse is the 1792 sandstone tower at Cape Henry, where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic, and it was the first lighthouse authorized by the U.S. federal government. John McComb Jr. built it of Aquia Creek sandstone, the same stone used in the White House, and it was the new government's first construction project under the Constitution. Cracks found in the 1870s led to a taller cast-iron lighthouse, finished in 1881 about 350 feet to the northeast, which is still an active light; the old tower is the one visitors climb. Preservation Virginia has owned the old tower since 1930. It stands inside Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story, so civilian visitors book a timed ticket, submit a SECNAV 5512 base security form if they are 18 or older, show a REAL ID if they are over 16, and ride a shuttle from the base gate.
