Campus Martius Park

$8.00

Campus Martius Park is a 1.2-acre public square in downtown Detroit where Woodward Avenue meets Michigan Avenue. After the Great Fire of 1805, Judge Augustus Woodward made Campus Martius the focal point of his plan to rebuild the city; the name, Latin for "Field of Mars", was borrowed from the principal square of Marietta, Ohio. The original square covered several acres but was lost in the 20th century as downtown was reshaped for car traffic, and the rebuilt park was dedicated on November 19, 2004. It has two performance stages, sculptures, a seasonal ice rink and the city's official Christmas tree, and a medallion in its walkway marks the point of origin of Detroit's coordinate system, from which the Mile Roads are counted. The Civil War-era Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument stands at its southeast tip.
