Bottomless Lakes State Park, near Roswell, was designated in 1933 as New Mexico's first state park. Its chain of small, deep lakes formed when underground gypsum and dolomite dissolved and the ground above collapsed into sinkholes along the Pecos River valley; despite the name, none is truly bottomless, and the deepest, Lea Lake, reaches only about 90 feet. Lea Lake is the only one open to swimming and has a developed beach, while the others are used for fishing, scuba diving, and wildlife viewing. Hiking trails along the rim connect several of the lakes.
