The Public Garden is a 24-acre park in the heart of Boston, bounded by Charles, Beacon, Arlington and Boylston streets, with Charles Street separating it from Boston Common. It was established in 1837, when philanthropist Horace Gray petitioned for the land to become the first public botanical garden in the United States. Its English-style landscape, designed by George F. Meacham, centers on a 4-acre pond crossed by an 1867 footbridge that was once the world's shortest functioning suspension bridge. The Swan Boats have been pedaled around the pond since 1877, and Nancy Schön's 1987 bronze Make Way for Ducklings statues stand between the pond and the Charles and Beacon streets entrance. The garden was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
