Blue Star Arts Complex

The Blue Star Arts Complex is a group of former warehouses on the San Antonio River in Southtown, across the river from the King William district, that now hold galleries, artist studios, lofts, restaurants and shops. The buildings were the Blue Star Ice and Cold Storage complex, part of a rail freight hub owned by the San Antonio Belt and Terminal Railway, and they were run-down and mostly empty when developers Hap Veltman and Bernard Lifshutz bought them in 1985. In 1986, after the San Antonio Museum of Art cancelled a show of local contemporary artists, the owners let the artists use a warehouse; the exhibition drew thousands of visitors and led to the Blue Star Contemporary art center and Contemporary Art Month. The warehouses were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 as the Blue Star Street Industrial Historic District, and that year artists in the complex started the First Friday art walk. Since the River Walk's Eagleland segment opened in 2010, the complex has also been a trailhead for the Mission Reach.
