Iron-on patch

Blue Dome District

$8.00

The Blue Dome District is a downtown Tulsa neighborhood just east of the central business district, named for the Blue Dome Building, an Art Deco former Gulf Oil gas station and auto garage at East 2nd Street and South Elgin Avenue. The area grew up around the railroads: the Midland Valley Railroad began serving it in 1903, and in 1918 the Santa Fe built a large freight depot and rail yard there, filling the blocks with wholesale warehouses. In 1926 East Second Street, which crosses the district, was designated the official route of Route 66, bringing garages and other auto businesses. Wholesale trade faded after World War II as freight moved to trucks, and the 17-block core, with 45 contributing buildings on 59 acres, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Blue Dome Historic District. Its old warehouses now hold many of downtown Tulsa's restaurants and bars.
