The Blackstone District is the stretch of Farnam Street between roughly 36th and 40th Streets in Midtown Omaha, named for the Blackstone Hotel built at South 36th Street in 1915. Under owner Charles Schimmel the hotel became one of the premier hotels on the Lincoln Highway between Chicago and San Francisco, and by one version of its disputed history the Reuben sandwich was first served in one of its restaurants in 1925; butter brickle ice cream was also introduced there. After decades as offices, the building reopened in November 2020 as the Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel, and the surrounding blocks of Farnam Street were redeveloped into a restaurant and bar district. The district lies in the West Farnam, or Blackstone, neighborhood inside the Gold Coast Historic District, and Berkshire Hathaway has been headquartered at nearby Blackstone Plaza since 1962.
