Bishop Arts District

The Bishop Arts District is a shopping and entertainment district in North Oak Cliff, about two miles southwest of Downtown Dallas, centered on the corner of North Bishop Avenue and Davis Street. Its 1920s warehouses and storefronts now hold independent boutiques, restaurants, bars, coffee shops and art galleries. In the 1930s a trolley stop on Davis Street was the busiest in Dallas, but the area declined from the mid-1960s as shoppers moved to malls and Oak Cliff lost its streetcars. Developer Jim Lake began buying the run-down storefronts in 1984, and renovations through the 1990s and 2000s added murals, brick pavers and a walkable main-street feel. Its commercial core is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the North Bishop Avenue Commercial Historic District, and since 2016 the Dallas Streetcar has run here from Union Station.
