The Bessie Smith Cultural Center is an African American museum and performance hall at 200 East M.L. King Boulevard in downtown Chattanooga, named for the blues singer Bessie Smith, who grew up in the city and busked on its street corners as a child. It grew out of the Chattanooga African American Museum, founded in 1983 by ten local leaders to show the contributions African Americans made to the development of Chattanooga. In 1996 the museum and the Bessie Smith Hall moved into a newly renovated building on the old 9th Street, once the heart of the city's Black business district and now M.L. King Boulevard. The combined institution took the name Bessie Smith Cultural Center in 2009. Each June it sponsors the Bessie Smith Strut as part of the city's Riverbend Festival.
