The Belle of Louisville is a steam-powered sternwheeler owned and operated by the city of Louisville and moored at its downtown wharf beside the Riverfront Plaza/Belvedere. Built in 1914 by James Rees & Sons in Pittsburgh as the ferry Idlewild, she ran between Memphis and West Memphis before working Louisville excursions from 1931 and later cruising the inland rivers as the Avalon. Jefferson County bought the run-down boat at auction in 1962 for $34,000, restored her and renamed her the Belle of Louisville. She is the oldest operating Mississippi River-style steamboat, and her steam calliope can be heard for blocks when she is readying to depart. Every year since 1963 she has run the Great Steamboat Race during the Kentucky Derby Festival, and she was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989.
