Iron-on patch

Belle Isle Aquarium

$8.00

The Belle Isle Aquarium is a public aquarium in Belle Isle Park, designed by George D. Mason and Albert Kahn and opened on August 18, 1904. Its single long gallery has an arched ceiling covered in green glass tile meant to feel like being underwater, and when it opened it was the third largest aquarium in the world. It was the oldest continually operating public aquarium in North America when the city closed it in 2005 to save money, and the Belle Isle Conservancy reopened it on August 18, 2012. It opens on limited days rather than daily, with free admission (Friday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. under the Conservancy), so check the current open days before you go. The island can be reached on foot or by bike over the MacArthur Bridge, and cars entering the state park need a Michigan Recreation Passport.
