Beer Can House

John Milkovisch, a retired upholsterer for the Southern Pacific Railroad, began cladding his Houston bungalow in flattened beer cans in 1968 at age 56, eventually covering the house in an estimated 50,000-plus cans over roughly two decades. He cut can lids and pull-tabs into shimmering curtains and fences and embedded marbles, rocks, and scrap metal into the concrete of his yard. Milkovisch worked alone, largely from cans he and neighbors drank, until his death in 1988. The nonprofit Orange Show Center for Visionary Art acquired the house in 2001 and reopened it to the public after restoration in 2008.
