Beale Street is the historic 'Home of the Blues' in downtown Memphis, a strip of music clubs, restaurants and shops running east from the Mississippi River. In the early 1900s it was the center of Black commerce and culture in Memphis, lined with clubs, restaurants and shops, many of them owned by African Americans, and W. C. Handy's 'The Memphis Blues' (1912) grew out of its music scene. The section from Main to Fourth Street was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and the 'Home of the Blues' by an act of Congress in 1977. Urban renewal razed blocks of buildings around it, and the redeveloped strip was run through the city, the Beale Street Development Corporation and the management company Performa rather than by its original Black business owners; the city took over day-to-day management in 2012. The Beale Street Historic District joined the U.S. Civil Rights Trail in 2020, and the Beale Street Music Festival is held each May in Tom Lee Park at the street's river end.
