The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, often called the Baltimore Basilica, was the first Catholic cathedral built in the United States after the nation's founding. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who also served as Thomas Jefferson's Architect of the Capitol, designed it in the neoclassical style for John Carroll, the first American Catholic bishop; construction began in 1806 and the church opened on May 31, 1821. Its great central dome, with 24 skylights suggested by Jefferson, lights an interior that a $34 million restoration completed in 2006 returned to Latrobe's original design. The basilica hosted the councils that led to the Catholic University of America and the Baltimore Catechism, and most of the country's first bishops were consecrated here. It is a co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, a working parish, a National Historic Landmark and, since 1993, a National Shrine.
