Basilica of Saint Mary

$8.00

The Basilica of Saint Mary is a Catholic minor basilica and co-cathedral on Hennepin Avenue between 16th and 17th Streets, near Loring Park in Minneapolis. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style by Emmanuel Louis Masqueray, who also designed the Cathedral of Saint Paul, it held its first Mass in 1914 and in 1926 became the first basilica in the United States. Its white Vermont granite walls are fronted by a colonnaded portico with two 116-foot spires, and the cross above its dome stands 200 feet above the floor. Inside, the barrel-vaulted nave rises 82 feet and seats 1,600. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its campus holds Timothy Schmalz's Homeless Jesus sculpture.
