Barton Springs Pool

$8.00

Barton Springs Pool is a spring-fed outdoor swimming pool in Zilker Park, Austin, set in the channel of Barton Creek. It is fed mainly by Main Barton Spring (also called Parthenia Spring), the fourth-largest spring in Texas, with water from the Edwards Aquifer; smaller outlets feed the pool too, and Eliza, Old Mill and Upper Barton springs belong to the same spring system. The water stays at about 68–70 °F all year, so people swim here in every season. William Barton, who settled the land in 1837, named springs after his daughters Parthenia, Eliza and Zenobia, and Andrew Jackson Zilker, the last private owner, deeded the property to the city in 1918. The pool is also home to the endangered Barton Springs salamander, which lives only here and in a few nearby springs.
