Iron-on patch

Barrio Viejo (Barrio Histórico)

$8.00

Barrio Viejo, also called the Barrio Histórico and listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Barrio Libre, is a neighborhood just south of downtown Tucson. It is known as a largely unchanged 19th-century Hispanic neighborhood of close-packed adobe row houses with very plain detailing, built as townhouses for Mexican ranching families. The National Register district, listed in 1978, holds more than 200 contributing structures and lies roughly between 14th and 18th streets and between Stone and Osborne avenues, with Meyer Avenue through its center. Much of the wider neighborhood was cleared in the late 1960s to build the Tucson Convention Center. The El Tiradito shrine and the Teatro Carmen stand in the barrio, and its walls carry many murals.
