Iron-on patch

Bahama Village

$8.00

Bahama Village is a historic neighborhood in Key West's Old Town, covering about 16 blocks west of Whitehead Street next to the Truman Annex. It is named for the Bahamian immigrants who settled it from the 1870s, and it was long the island's main African American neighborhood, home to the Frederick Douglass School, which opened in 1870, and to churches such as Bethel AME. Petronia Street runs through the middle of the neighborhood, and a sign on Petronia still announces the way in. Every October, Goombay, a two-day street party named for the goatskin goombay drums, celebrates the neighborhood's Bahamian heritage with food, art and dancing during Fantasy Fest, the same month Key West holds its Junkanoo parade. The village also has the city's public swimming pool, and after decades of gentrification it is home to many of the island's most popular restaurants.
