Iron-on patch

Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

$8.00

Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge covers about 9,000 acres in the southeast corner of Virginia Beach, most of it on the Currituck Banks Peninsula, a barrier spit between the Atlantic Ocean and Back Bay that is attached to the mainland rather than an island. Established in 1938 and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it protects dunes, maritime forest, freshwater marsh, ponds and ocean beach, and it is an important stop on the Atlantic Flyway for migrating birds such as snow geese. The visitor contact station is at the end of Sandpiper Road, south of Sandbridge. False Cape State Park adjoins the refuge to the south, and the refuge's trails, beach and reservation-only tram are the way in.
