The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture is an archive and museum of the College of Charleston at 125 Bull Street, in the Harleston Village neighborhood of downtown Charleston. It occupies the site and building of the former Avery Normal Institute, dedicated in 1868, which was the city's first accredited secondary school for African Americans until it closed in 1954. Avery alumni led by Lucille Whipper formed the Avery Institute of Afro-American History and Culture in 1978, and the research center was established with the College in 1985, opening its restored building in 1990. Its archives hold more than six thousand items documenting African American life in Charleston and the Lowcountry, and it presents exhibitions and free guided tours on weekdays.
