Assateague State Park

Assateague State Park covers a roughly two-mile stretch of Assateague Island, a barrier island on Maryland's Atlantic coast, sandwiched between the ocean and Sinepuxent Bay. It sits adjacent to the much larger Assateague Island National Seashore, and both are known for the feral horses that roam the dunes and salt marsh, popularly believed to descend from horses that survived a colonial-era shipwreck or from livestock left by early settlers. The park offers an oceanfront beach for swimming and surf fishing, along with bayside camping. Its horses are a separate, smaller herd than the more famous Chincoteague ponies to the south.
