Asiatown

$8.00

Asiatown, long known as Houston's Chinatown, is a sprawling Asian business district in Southwest Houston centered on Bellaire Boulevard between Gessner Road and Beltway 8, about 12 miles from downtown. Its first businesses opened in 1983, followed by Diho Square and the 120,000-square-foot Dynasty Plaza, as Chinese merchants moved out of the old Chinatown east of downtown in search of cheaper land. It grew through the 1990s and 2000s into one of the largest car-oriented Chinatowns in the southern United States, with shopping centers of Chinese, Hong Kong, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Filipino, Thai and Malaysian restaurants, Asian supermarkets, and nearly a dozen banks along a single mile of Bellaire. Vietnamese-run restaurants here also serve Louisiana-style crawfish. The Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau uses the name Asiatown for Chinatown and neighboring Little Saigon together, a name that has spread but is still disputed.
