America's Black Holocaust Museum

$8.00

America's Black Holocaust Museum is a history museum in Milwaukee's Bronzeville neighborhood, at 401 West North Avenue. James Cameron, who survived a lynching at age 16 in 1930, founded it in 1988 after a visit to Israel's Yad Vashem convinced him that personal stories were the way to tell the African American experience. The original museum closed in 2008 during the Great Recession and lived on from 2012 as a virtual museum online. It reopened in February 2022 on the ground floor of The Griot, a new building on the footprint of the original museum. Its galleries follow the African American experience from African peoples before captivity through the Middle Passage, enslavement, Reconstruction and Jim Crow to the present.
