Iron-on patch

American Swedish Institute

$8.00

The American Swedish Institute is a museum and cultural center on Park Avenue in the Phillips West neighborhood of Minneapolis, devoted to the role Sweden and Swedish Americans have played in American life. Its centerpiece is the chateau-style Swan Turnblad Mansion, completed in 1908 for the publisher of the Swedish-language newspaper Svenska Amerikanska Posten. The Turnblads donated the house and the newspaper in 1929 to found the institute, and the mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2012 the institute opened the adjoining Nelson Cultural Center, a 34,000-square-foot addition with galleries, a craft workshop and the FIKA restaurant, dedicated by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden. Each holiday season the mansion's rooms are decorated to show how Christmas is celebrated in the Nordic countries.
