Almaden Quicksilver County Park

$8.00

Almaden Quicksilver County Park is a Santa Clara County park of about 4,163 acres in the hills just south of San Jose, on the grounds of the New Almaden mercury mines. The mines, named for the great mercury mine at Almadén in Spain, operated from 1847 to 1976 and supplied the quicksilver used to extract gold during the California Gold Rush. The mining district was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961, and ruins of mine buildings and miners' housing are scattered along the trails, most of all at English Camp, settled by Cornish miners in the 1860s. The county bought the mines in 1976 and opened the land as a park with trails climbing from about 600 feet to over 1,700 feet, with views over San Jose. The park lies outside San Jose's city limits, in unincorporated Santa Clara County next to the New Almaden community.
