African American Museum & Library at Oakland

$8.00

The African American Museum and Library at Oakland (AAMLO) is a museum and non-circulating research library in the Oakland Public Library system, dedicated to African American history and culture. It occupies the Charles S. Greene building on 14th Street, the city's 1902 Carnegie library, which served as Oakland's main library until 1951. Its archive holds more than 160 collections of photographs, manuscripts, letters, diaries, newspapers and oral histories, including material on the Black Panthers, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X and the papers of figures such as Ron Dellums and Barbara Lee. Two galleries host changing exhibitions of art, history and culture. The collection grew from a private effort begun in 1946 by two Oakland couples, Eugene and Ruth Lasartemay and Jesse and Marcella Ford.
