Adam Thoroughgood House

$8.00

The Adam Thoroughgood House, now usually called the Thoroughgood House, is a brick colonial house at 1636 Parish Road in Virginia Beach's Thoroughgood neighborhood, built around 1719 and one of the oldest surviving homes in the city. Despite the name, Adam Thoroughgood did not build it: he arrived in Virginia in 1622 as an indentured servant, rose to the House of Burgesses and received a 5,350-acre land grant in 1635, and the house was most likely built by one of his descendants. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 as a prime example of early colonial architecture in Virginia. The City of Virginia Beach bought the property in 2003 and reopened the house in 2011 after a restoration funded in part by a federal Save America's Treasures grant. Free guided tours start at the education center, pass through the gardens and continue into the house, Thursday through Sunday.
