9th Street Italian Market

The 9th Street Italian Market is the popular name for the South 9th Street Curb Market, an open-air market street in South Philadelphia lined with awning-covered sidewalks, curbside produce carts, butcher shops, cheese shops, bakeries, cafés and restaurants. Its historic heart is 9th Street between Christian Street and Washington Avenue, and the market is generally considered to run from Fitzwater Street south toward Federal Street, with the Italian Market neighborhood reaching Wharton Street. Italian immigrants began settling here around 1884, shops opened along 9th Street soon after to serve them, and many current vendors trace their businesses to the first decade of the 20th century. Mexican, Central American, Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese merchants have since joined the Italian shops. The market appears in Rocky, where a vendor tosses Rocky Balboa an orange during his training run.
