Sixth Street runs through downtown Austin and was originally named Pecan Street, from the city's early practice of naming east–west streets after trees. The Bastrop Highway to East Texas entered town along Pecan Street in 1839, and after the railroad arrived in 1871 the street filled with two- and three-story limestone Victorian commercial buildings, joined in 1886 by the Driskill Hotel. The nine blocks between Lavaca Street and I-35 form the Sixth Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. From the late 1960s, clubs such as Antone's and the Black Cat turned it into the center of Austin's live-music scene, and it is still lined with music venues and bars and packed during South by Southwest. East Sixth has traditionally closed to cars on weekend nights so crowds can walk the street, though a city pilot that began in December 2024 has been restoring some vehicle access, so check before you go.
