18th & Vine is the historic heart of Black Kansas City, a few blocks east of downtown, and one of the places where Kansas City jazz took shape. The riff-based, blues-driven style grew out of jam sessions in the district's crowded clubs in the 1930s and 1940s, and Charlie Parker was among the musicians who got their start here. The Museums at 18th & Vine building holds both the American Jazz Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate that opened in 1997, and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, with the Blue Room jazz club at the corner of 18th and Vine. Across 18th Street stands the 1912 Gem Theater, and on Highland Avenue the Mutual Musicians Foundation, a National Historic Landmark, has hosted after-midnight weekend jam sessions since 1930. The blocks were listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district in 1991.
