16th Street, known for decades as the 16th Street Mall, is a 1¼-mile (2.0 km) pedestrian and transit street through downtown Denver that opened in 1982 to ease bus congestion and improve pedestrian access. Its original stretch was designed by I. M. Pei's firm, with granite paving in charcoal, light gray and 'Colorado red' laid in a diamond pattern inspired by Navajo blankets and western diamondback rattlesnake skin. The pedestrian portion runs from Wynkoop Street to Civic Center Station at Broadway, and the free 16th Street FreeRide shuttle stops at every intersection and continues to Union Station. A rebuild that began in April 2022 replaced the worn paving, moved the buses to a center transitway between wide pedestrian zones and replanted the trees; it was completed in 2025, the street reopened with a celebration on October 4, 2025, and the city officially dropped 'Mall' from its name. The street is lined with hundreds of shops and restaurants, including the Denver Pavilions.
